According to Igad Climate Prediction and Application Centre , ICPAC’s weekly weather forecast for the IGAD, region, moderate amounts of rainfall are expected in central to western South Sudan, western Ethiopia, and southern Sudan.
Warmer than average temperatures are forecast across the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA), with episodes of extreme heat stress in eastern Sudan.
moderate rainfall of between 50- 200mm is expected over parts of central to western South Sudan, western Ethiopia, southern Sudan, and parts of western Kenya.
Additionally the forecast highlights that Light rainfall of less than 50 mm, (where 1 mm of rainfall is equivalent to 1 liter of water per square meter) is expected in central Sudan, eastern South Sudan, eastern Uganda, western Kenya, central to southern Somalia and western Eritrea.
However the forecast projects some rainfall anomalies, where by, more than usual rainfall is expected over parts of southern Sudan, western South Sudan, north-western Ethiopia and western Eritrea.
Altogether less than usual rainfall is expected in Uganda, western Kenya, central to eastern South Sudan and parts of southern Ethiopia.
In addition, exceptional rainfall amounts exceeding 10% on record is expected over a few areas in Southern Sudan, western Ethiopia and Western South Sudan.
During this period between 11-18 June 2024 forecast, floods will also be witnessed, where by the expected heavy rainfall over parts of southern Sudan, western Ethiopia and western South Sudan is likely to lead to flooding in these areas.
In this regard communities in these areas are at risk, hence advised to exercise caution during this forecasted period as indicated above.
High temperatures of above 32℃, are expected over central to northern Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, north-eastern Ethiopia, and parts of north-western Somalia, while moderate to high temperatures of between 20-32℃, are expected over most parts of South Sudan, Somalia, eastern and northern Kenya, central to northern Uganda, and southern and north-western Tanzania, where as, Mild temperature conditions of. less than 20℃, are expected over Rwanda, Burundi, and parts of central to southern Tanzania, central to western Kenya and central to southern Ethiopia.
