Residents who reside adjacent to wildlife corridors have been engaging in human wildlife interactions with wildlife for a very long time now in Taita Taveta County-Kenya.
The interactions between humans and wildlife have lingered on for many years with no permanent solution to it, while communities continue to lose lives, property and food in their farms after invasion of wild animals especially the elephants.
Human Wildlife Conflict HWC as commonly known is now referred to as human wildlife interaction, scenarios that for long have escalated cases of insecurity among communities in Taita Taveta County, which silently and coolly lies between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks.
Lack of security and fighting of the scarce available resources among wildlife especially the elephants and communities who adjacently live along wildlife corridors, forced many to flee their homes, some lost relatives and properties and heightened cases of poaching and killing of wild animals.
Appreciably, the presence of advanced technology which saw the introduction of an App called Earth Ranger Application and employment of many rangers have brought relief, lasting hope, peace and harmony among communities.
As much as rangers have been able to maintain peace, harmony and security within the areas, ranger populations is still low, something that should be prioritized, if security, long term peace, harmony and coexistence between humans and wildlife is to realized and to keep on the narratives of hope for now and future generations.
The SDG goal number 16 of the 17 Un Global goals of agenda 2030, is to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
Without a peaceful and inclusive environment, development isn’t sustainable, development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
